Our New Home

During its first 53 years, KMFA broadcast from a 6,000 square foot leased space. We now own our brand-new, purpose-built 18,000 square foot home.

KMFA’s new space is engaging and educating future generations of music lovers on-air, online, and in person at our purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility on the shores of Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin.

The freestanding KMFA building is the centerpiece of The Hatchery, which has an “urban village” feel. In addition to KMFA, the community hub includes the Rebekah Baines Johnson (RBJ) Center, which provides affordable housing for seniors; retail; offices, and market rate rentals on its 17.8-acre site at 21 Waller Street.

In our new home, you are able to deepen your relationship with KMFA, whether by touring our studios, attending free music performances throughout the year, or cheering on ensembles at Listen Local broadcasts. And wherever you are, you can engage with high-quality, in-depth, and ever-evolving classical content.

Whether you’re five or ninety-five, a brand-new listener or longtime supporter, our new home is your home for classical music, too.

Location

At our new location in East Austin, KMFA has joined a vibrant, thriving, and diverse neighborhood—and is playing a vital role in building a more connected city.

KMFA will continue to cultivate an audience that already reflects the future of Austin and Texas. Today, our listening audience is 16% black, 12% Latino, and 21% younger than 35.

KMFA’s home IS east of I-35 in A NEW DEVELOPMENT along Lady Bird Lake CALLED “THE HATCHERY.”

Once the site of a federal fish hatchery, the nonprofit Austin Geriatric Center acquired the land after President Lyndon Baines Johnson closed the hatchery before leaving office in January 1969. The RBJ Center, currently occupying the site, is being updated and integrated into the overall master plan, which includes: Hatchery Park, micro-units, market rate residential, 500 units of affordable senior housing, 169,000 square feet of additional office space, and 23,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. More details are available at www.thehatcheryatx.com.

In 2022, KMFA hosted more than 190 events, with nearly 7,000 visitors to our new home. 33 local arts partners benefited from using the facility in 2022 alone.

Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to share the joy and beauty of music with everyone who needs it.
